Review: John’s Rib House

Johnny Mcconnaughey, Staff Writer

If you’re in the mood for some down home, Mississippi, finger lickin’ good BBQ then John’s Rib House is the place to go. Located on Rt 53 and Maple Avenue in Lisle, this restaurant is a 30 minute drive from Plainfield, which is worth it for this BBQ.

The restaurant is owned by John Singleton Sr. and his son John Jr. along with help from Senior’s wife Edna. They opened the shop in 2007 and since then they’ve been serving the best ribs in town.

The first thing I ordered were the Barbecue Rib Tips. These are the burnt ends of a slab of ribs. The rib tips are slathered in their amazing sauce and have the best flavor. If you like a smoky, charred flavor on your meat, I highly suggest ordering this dish.

I love seafood, and let me tell you, this place has the best deep fried catfish I have ever had. The breading is crispy and crunchy and the catfish does not have an overpowering seafood taste to it. You can’t beat deep fried fish.

For dessert I had the Peach Cobbler. This was outstanding. It is made fresh every day by Edna Singleton at her own home. Then it is transported to the restaurant. The crust is flakey and warm and the peaches are sweet and succulent. By far the best peach cobbler I have ever tasted.

Now John Jr. is not at the restaurant all of the time. He also runs a food stand downtown Naperville on Friday and Saturday nights. At the stand he offers things like pulled pork, hot links, pulled pork nachos, or just a simple hotdog. He does it right down there in Naperville. When the bars let out, John’s stand fills up. He is out there from 11pm to 2am

Aside from a food stand, the Singletons also own a food truck that they bring to many festivals around Illinois. This coming year be sure to stop and see them at Rib Fest, serving some of the best BBQ in town.
