WWE women face blatant discrimination, sexism in wrestling universe

Women have never really been taken seriously in the manly world of the WWE. Most of the history of the WWE, women have been always been portrayed as the eye candy to the mostly male populated fan base. Most of the time, women only get one match per card and usually the match is something like a mud sling match (where two wrestlers literally fight a plastic kiddy pool filled with mud) or a bar and panties match.

Much of the WWE universe has been tired of this treatment towards women wrestlers in recent years. The outcry became more prevalent when in 2010, the Women’s division turned into the “Diva’s” division. When this happened, the WWE started hiring women who have more curves than wrestling ability. Wrestlers like Kelly Kelly, Summer Rae, and The Bella Twins (the last of which got into the WWE by the Diva Search in 2006) have been accused of not being able to wrestle and only getting hired because of their looks.

The complaints from the WWE universe hit an all time high when on an episode of Monday Night Raw, there was a Divas tag match between Paige and Emma and The Bella Twins that lasted only 30 seconds. The next day on Twitter, the hashtag #givedivasachance was trending on the social media site.

Vince McMahon and the WWE took the Twitter feedback and vowed to make the diva’s division more on par with the fans standards.

“The women our company are all extremely talented and need to be put in the spotlight,” McMahon said in an article on Whatculture.com. “The the view of women is changing in the the United States and the WWE needs to change with it.”

After the uproar from Twitter, the WWE actually took action, trying to make the Diva’s matches every Raw more than just a few minutes in length, and by putting more than one match on each card. The WWE also took action by sending up Becky Lynch and Charlotte from the developmental brand of WWE called NXT, which a lot of fans say has one of the best women’s in all of professional wrestling. This is when the Diva’s Revolution started.
So now after years of the horrid wrestling and mic skills from the attractive ladies of the Diva’s division, the WWE finally is trying to make the Diva’s division watchable. They tried to take the right steps, and both Becky Lynch and Charlotte (who is the current Diva’s Champion) have gotten over with the fans. But now that the “Diva’s Revolution” is now fully on the way, the WWE has messed it up already.

Charlotte is now the WWE DIva’s Champion who she won from Nikki Bella at last September’s Night of Champions, but still the WWE is still putting Nikki Bella on every Diva match on every Raw and Smackdown. She was in the only matches fro women on both Pay-per-view. They continually push her to championship levels, even though she is not liked by any the fans, and she’s not even properly trained.

Even with the NXT girls that have recently been brought up to the main roster, a lot of them are getting lost in the world that Nikki Bella controls. Performers like Becky Lynch, Nomani, and Cameron where all big successes in NXT but are now just another face in the coward.

“When Lynch was in NXT she always got huge pops from the fans every time she came out.” said WhatCulture in the youtube segment they did called Pipe Bomb, “Now she is just put to the sidekick role to Charlotte.”

Since the WWE started the revolution, there has been more than one match on Raw and Smackdown. The women of the company now have 2 more matches per episode that last about 10 to 15 minutes. So that means that about ⅓ of a weekly showing of Raw is run by the Divas. Which is all fine and good, but it is only good if good wrestlers are wrestling. They need to fill those matches with people like Becky Lynch and Paige, females who can actually wrestle and are really fun to watch, not the human botch machine known as Nikki Bella. The Women’s division of any pro wrestling organization could be Interesting, the women of the company just need to be well trained and have memorable personalities.

It is great that Vince McMahon and company wants to try to improve the Diva’s division, but the way they are doing it is completely destroying the division rather than helping it. Just look at something like TNA or Ring of Honor, who have both been putting out way better women’s wrestling matches then the WWE has ever put out, and those considered to be the stepping stone to WWE.  The WWE needs to change the way they look at women in the company, instead of looking at them as sex symbols who are only there to sell copies of swimsuit edition of the WWE magazine, they should start looking at them as equal to the men of the company. That is Why NXT is putting out such great content, is because they treat their females wrestlers the same way they treat the male wrestlers. They book them the same way and they give time and effort to their matches and rivalries the same amount that they do the men. Women’s wrestling could be interesting, if you book it right.
