Zodiac signs storm pop culture

Zodiac sign have reigned the galaxy for ages. However, they’ve recently made a “comeback” of sorts— becoming increasingly popular on the Internet.
“In its 2004 Science and Engineering Indicators report, the National Science Foundation bemoans the fact that 28 percent of Americans believe in astrology and 18 percent are ‘not sure’; 15 percent read their horoscopes every day or ‘quite often’ and 30 percent ’just occasionally,’” said MIT Media Lab Alum Jofish Kaye in an essay from the MIT Media Lab.
Many people enjoy the idea of astrology and horoscopes because they seem to explain personalities, and make predictions about future wealth, love, and family life.
“What most people know about astrology is their “sign,” which refers to one of the 12 constellations of the zodiac. This is a form of sun-sign astrology, which is the astrology upon which newspaper horoscopes are based,” said Ed Grabianowski in an article he wrote for HowStuffWorks.
Traditionally, there are 12 “signs” pertaining to the astrological spectrum. Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.
“The position of the sun, stars, moon and planets at the time of people’s birth (not their conception) is said to shape their personality, affect their romantic relationships and predict their economic fortunes, among other divinations,” said Grabianowski in his article.
Many signs are also stereotyped as having distinct personalities. Aries is associated with anger, Scorpio is dark and brooding, Aquarius as creative and outgoing— and so on.
“Astrology implies a cause-and effect relationship between the position of the planet relative to the stars and advice on day-to-day problems,” said Kaye.
There is not a certain method to read and analyze people’s astrological signs, however various ancient cultures have always had their own ways of doing it. Almost every culture has had a form of astrology. Today we know Western Astrology practices the most. More famous ones incule the Mayans and the Chinese.
“It seems entirely reasonable to postulate that there’s no rational connection between the positions of celestial bodies and day-to-day decision making; horoscopes are indeed a poor way to make rational decisions. But as individuals in a complex world, we have a large number of irrational decisions to make every day—from what to wear in the morning, to what to eat at night,” said Kaye in his article.
It is said that there are many factors that go into what an astrological sign can say about a person, such as planet alignment, angles, signs, and houses. These each are supposed to build the persons future and personality.
“Though it seems highly inaccurate in determining things about certain people, I have felt that a lot of the qualities have applied to me (Aquarius) and as well other people of different astrological signs,” said Junior Onyinye Udeogu.
