Competitive Cheer looks to build on last year’s success
December 17, 2015
The varsity cheerleading team started their 2015-2016 season when they placed 3rd in their first competition on November 3rd. The team is looking to improve on last years’ sectionals finish.
The team is supported by seniors Meghan Day, Chloe Hildebranski, Courtney Kegg, Emily Gaik, Kat Heyden, and Emily Worfel. Coaches Stephanie Winchester and Stephanie Gloede are leading a group that consists of 6 seniors, 8 juniors, 5 sophomores, and 3 freshmen.
After a season of up and downs and finishing 9th out of 18th in sectionals in the 2014-2015 season, the team is looking to improve this year. The group has improved since last year, and has expectations to go past sectionals.
“Our goal is to place top 3 or top 5 depending on the amount of teams that are there, our conference is on January 16 and we hope to get first place,” Junior Aliza Velastegui said. “Sectionals are on January 30 so we hope to make it to state.”
Despite the talent that the group has, the expectations are also realistic. It is very competitive in Varsity cheer and it would be very difficult for the team to win state.
“We probably won’t win state, just because there are a lot of amazing teams in the large varsity division that we’d be up against,” Velastegui said. “But going to state is definitely a possibility.”
Even though the chances to win state are slim, the team is still focusing on improving from last year and is ready to make the next step to getting to where they want to be.
“Last year we had our ups and downs. But this year we have some great and talented girls who are ready to work,” Hildebranski said. “We’ve improved so much already and are looking forward to doing even better.”
Upcoming competitions are on December 20th, January 20th, and January 24th and conference will be on January 16th while sectionals are on January 30th.
“We’re expecting to do very well this season,” Hildebranski said. “We hope to do a lot better than last year and we think we will place high at conference and sectionals as well.”
The group has improved and is ready to compete this season. With all of the talent that the team has, it would not be surprising if they accomplished all of the goals and expectations that they have set out.
