The Bachelor Review
February 7, 2019
Roses, random watch parties, rings and so many blondes. The season 23 premiere of “The Bachelor” aired on Jan. 7. This show is for anyone who loves romance, petty drama and watching people embarrass themselves on national television. Once viewers start watching, they just can’t stop.
Colton Underwood is the new bachelor and has had a long journey trying to find love on national television before this. He was first seen on Becca Kufrin’s season of “The Bachelorette” and was one of the final four. After a costar from a previous season, Tia Booth, confessed her love for Underwood, Kufrin became wary of hurting her friend and sent him home. Booth and Underwood attempted to rekindle their relationship on ABC’s Bachelor spin off, “Bachelor in Paradise” but that also did not work, and eventually Underwood was announced as the new bachelor.
He received some backlash from “Bachelor Nation” after the announcement. Some fans claimed he “wasn’t ready for love” or wanted two of the other final four from Becca’s season, Blake Horstmann and Jason Tartick.
On “The Bachelor”, Underwood confessed he was a virgin which took the internet by surprise and has become the main focus of the season so far. Producers have made it very clear by unnecessarily incorporating his virginity into ads and creating the tag line “What does he have to lose?”
Despite all the drama, Underwood seems readier than ever to find his future wife.
The premiere was three hours long which is typical for “The Bachelor” series. However, this season the three hours were split between the actual show and different watch parties that were happening all over the country. Fans gathered at various homes in Los Angeles, Dallas and Michigan to watch the premiere. Past “Bachelor” stars also joined the fans to celebrate the start of Underwood’s new season.
During these watch parties, random couples got engaged. Many boyfriends figured the best way to propose to their girlfriends was on her favorite reality tv show, which seems like a good idea in theory until several other guys have the same idea. The engagements were sweet, but a little tacky and cliché.
When watching the opening show, it did not disappoint. There was just enough drama to capture the viewers’ attention and keep them wanting more. One of the women, Catherine interrupted Underwood’s time with other women four times. She also gave Underwood her dog on the first night. Yes, Underwood has an obvious love for dogs but giving him a dog to watch? The poor guy has enough to worry about.
Another woman entered with a fake Australian accent to stand out. Contestant, Demi, was featured calling her mother who is currently serving in prison.
Despite the women purposely on the show to create drama, there are a few girls that are, in “Bachelor” terms, here for the right reasons. Cassie, a speech pathologist from California seems like a great potential wife for Underwood. Their shared love for children and her genuine, sweet nature instantly made viewers and Underwood attached. Cassie will probably go far this season and eventually have Underwood head over heels for her.
Hannah G. was another clear contender in the first hour. Underwood and Hannah bonded over their nerves at first and how she reminded him of home.
Also, about 50% of the girls were blonde. All the women were drop dead gorgeous, but yes, most of them were young and blonde. On the first night, it was hard to tell them apart, but as the season progresses and fans get to know the women more, it has become a little bit easier.
Overall, most of the introductions and entrances out of the limo from the women were in typical “Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” fashion. Girls came out in beautiful designer dresses with perfectly curled hair and flawless makeup. There was the one woman, though, who showed up in a sloth costume which took the viewers and the bachelor himself by surprise.
The premiere was entertaining, dramatic and made viewers want to watch it next week. ABC does a fantastic job of getting fans addicted and hooked.
Since the premiere, Underwood has been on one-on-one dates with Hannah B. and Elyse. The group dates thus far, have also been entertaining, including the women sharing stories of their firsts on a stage in front of an audience. Even though the show has just started, petty drama has already started to occur. Hannah B and Caelynn, who both competed in the Miss USA pageant, have continued their beauty queen drama on the show. Demi, the show’s cocky, loud, and obnoxious villain has angered multiple other contestants including Tracy and Courtney because of her arrogance.
Based on the first few episodes “Bachelor” fans are in for a wild ride this season.
