North’s homecoming dance should be filled with music and fun that make memories to last a lifetime. But, this is all dependent on the location.
This year’s homecoming dance will be once again held outside on North’s football field on Sept. 30. Practice needs to be revisited, and the dance relocated to the gym or fieldhouse.
Homecoming is all about the outfits: sparkly, short dresses with sky high heels. What is not part of the vision is having to don a heavy sweater because of the cold.
The weather during this time of year is unpredictable. Last year the temperatures dipped to 52 degrees on homecoming night. If the dance was held in the temperature-controlled gym, everyone could be comfortable regardless of a night chill in the air
Having the dance in its current location is also uncomfortable. Being on the football field and not having a solid surface to walk on can cause shoes like heels to sink into the turf. To avoid this, participants are forced to wear tennis shoes with a dress or suit which is not how students imagine their completed ensemble
Homecoming is a magical night, so dazzling decorations should be the first thing a person notices when walking into the dance. The football field can be hard to decorate due to minimal structures except for the chain link fencing and the metal bleachers. Holding this dance inside a smaller space adds better decorations like loose balloons.
As everyone knows, the vibe of a big event is set by population and noise. Being in a close space like the gym makes the music louder, the lights brighter and brings the people closer together.
Ultimately, the homecoming dance should be a night to remember. By holding it outside, the memories can quickly turn into nightmares.
