“The Brothers Sun”, a thrilling action comedy show created by Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu weaves an incredible story with twists, turns, betrayals and even a little romance.
Netflix released season one, on Jan 4, starring Academy Award winning actress Michelle Yeoh and breakthrough actors Justin Chien and Sam Song Li.
In the opening episode, Bruce Sun ( Li) discovers the sheltered, suburban life he thought he was living is a lie, and his long-lost brother, Charles Sun ( Chien), is actually a Taipei gangster working for their crime boss father who runs one of the most renowned crime syndicates in China.
After an assassination attempt on their father, Charles goes to Los Angeles to protect his mother (Yeoh) and brother. The story continues as Bruce has to adapt to his family’s gangster ways and Charles tries to adapt to a softer life.
Yeoh is known for other projects like “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once.” Chien and Li, while not as famous as Yeoh, hold their own against her by creating authentic familial relationships. When the two brothers bicker, it feels as though it is an unscripted moment between two siblings.
Series pilot director Kevin Tancharoen incorporates a heavy dose of gore and violence from the opening scene and rightly earns its TV-MA rating. These graphic depictions continue throughout each episode from severed heads to beating people with a chair leg.
While not my first choice, despite enjoying action shows or movies, I would highly recommend this show and would definitely watch it again.
“The Brothers Sun” is perfect for viewers who enjoy fast-paced action mixed with copious amounts of violence. Though the script perfectly incorporates humor into more serious moments, this series is certainly not for the squeamish.
