Four North art students exhibited their artwork in Lewis University’s 7th Annual High School Art Invitational in Romeoville from Jan. 11 to Jan. 18.
The invitational showcased the work of artists from nine local high schools.
“Art teachers from the surrounding area high schools can submit any type or style of artwork that was constructed in their academic courses,” art teacher Peter Quimby said.
Quimby chose students based on artistic drive, capabilities and various types of artwork. Seniors Hannah Belofsky and Lia Watt, junior Liam McManaman and sophomore Morgan Long were selected to display their notable pieces in the show .
“This year, I decided to choose strong artwork from four different courses: Ceramics, Advanced Drawing, Painting and AP Art and Design,” Quimby said.
Long won the “Best-in-Show” award with her untitled color pencil self-portrait playing her drumset.
“Mr. Quimby actually never told me that my art was going to Lewis [University], so figuring out that my piece was not only in the competition, but also won first place at the same time was a total shock,” Long said. “Going there and seeing all the amazing pieces made it even more shocking, as there was definitely some tough competition.”
Watt exhibited a hand-crafted ceramic bagel sandwich and McManaman displayed a Day of the Dead inspired watercolor painting.
“I am ecstatic to have been chosen this year as I know fellow students who had the opportunity to show their art last year, and I could not be more happy to be alongside the others this year in the show,” McManaman said.
Belofsky presented a color pencil piece depicting a girl and her teddy bear dreaming and is proud about being a part of the show.
“This is my second time being in the Lewis University high school invitational,” Belofsky said. “Seeing my art along with the work of other local artists makes me feel very inspired.”
North has participated in the show for seven years, and Quimby feels positive about this year’s students’ work and presentations.
“I’m beaming,” Quimby said. “The quality and creativity of my students’ work once again overwhelm expectations.”
