First baseman senior Colin Doyle takes the baseball field this spring season in hopes of securing a school record before his high school career ends.
Doyle has been working tirelessly to get his 367 batting average up. As a two sport athlete, baseball is a focus for his senior year.
“Baseball is a game of roller coaster emotions and has many ups and downs,” Doyle said. “The biggest challenge is to keep a level head and keep working hard,” “My big brother Gavin is my biggest role model, and he has demonstrated the hard work and dedication the game needs.”
Over the seasons, Doyle has built many relationships with teammates.
“Colin is a great teammate, he is charismatic and fun to be around,” senior catcher Aiden Simmons said. “He always has such an uplifting spirit and puts his team first, [and] he leads all the warmups for pregame and is definitely a leader on our team.”
The season opener against Bellville West is not until March 14. Head coach John Darlington typically decides team captains closer to the first game. Each senior and player must demonstrate sportsmanship on and off the field in hopes of getting the position as captain.
“Colin is an intelligent baseball player and leads by example and is a very good leader,”Darlington said.
With this being his fourth year stepping on the field the passion for the game is what lies beneath the surface of just another high school baseball game.
“I love baseball because of how much you have to learn from your failures and how much it challenges you mentally and physically to keep going and persevere,” Doyle said.
Being a senior athlete means deciding whether or not to further his athletic career beyond the high school playing fields. The decision and guidance lies in the hands of outside opinions like coaches and scouts.
“He definitely has the potential and he would make a great addition to the team,” Darlington said.
Doyle credits his family for providing him with support during his athletic career.
“They have always been there for me and given me someone to lean on,” Doyle said. “My mom and dad and siblings have to be the reason I am where I am with baseball.
