153 juniors and seniors were inducted into North’s chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) on April 15 in the auditorium.
The ceremony included introductions from sponsors Kelly Zack and Jessica Rottman, speeches from the current NHS officers and a message from guest speaker Jodi Patel. Afterwards, each individual was inducted by name, as well as a candle-lighting ceremony recognizing the pillars of NHS: service, character, scholarship and leadership.
Prospective NHS members have to meet specific requirements in their application to be evaluated by a team of teachers. Their application must represent the four pillars.
“Students need a minimum of a 4.5 cumulative GPA to get invited to apply for membership,” Zack said. “The application asks for two examples of leadership, two examples of service and two examples of active participation in sports, clubs or activities. Outside recommendations are also needed, along with a demonstration of classroom leadership.”
Zack and Rottmann are optimistic about the new members of the NHS.
“This year has been a great experience for me and Ms. Rottmann,” Zack said. “We are looking forward to working with our new group of inductees and the new ideas they will bring.”
Current NHS President senior Brendan Orsi is hopeful for the incoming group’s work in the North chapter.
“I could not be more proud of all those who’ve been inducted tonight, and I cannot wait to see the induction next year and see how far they’ve come,” Orsi said.
