“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” a hilarious horror comedy sequel by director Tim Burton, took theaters by storm starting Sep. 6.
“Beetlejuice” was released in 1988 and tells the story of an eccentric teenage girl Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder), her stepmother Delia Deetz (Catherine O’Hara), and her father Charles Deetz (Jefferey Jones) as her family buys an old house in a small town called Winter River. The house used to be owned by the married couple Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin), who died in a horrific accident and have been stuck in the house as ghosts ever since. The Deetzes torment the late Maitlands, so the Maitlands attempt to scare them out of the house. When their attempts fail, they turn to Lydia and a trickster demon, Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), to solve their pesky human problem.
The second movie continues with a grown Lydia working as a psychic on a show with her manager turned fiancé, Rory (Justin Theroux). Lydia soon finds out that her father has met an untimely demise, and she and her stepmother decide to head back to Winter River for the funeral. Lydia has to tell her daughter, Astrid Deetz (Jenna Ortega), about her grandfather’s death. During the wake for the funeral, Astrid gets tired of her family’s eccentric ways and accidentally bikes into the yard of a boy in town, Jeremy (Arthur Conti), whom she then befriends. Jeremy turns out to be a ghost and brings Astrid to the demon realm, where she finds out he is evil and has made her swap her life for his. Lydia then has to call upon Beetlejuice to bring her there and help her save her daughter from being stuck in the underworld forever.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” also has a secondary plot where an evil ghost, Delores (Monica Bellucci), is hunting down Beetlejuice and is killing different demons in the demon realm. After Astrid, Lydia, and Beetlejuice come back to the human world, Delores makes her way there, and the three have to defeat her before she kills them all.
Renowned film score producer Danny Elfman, known for popular soundtracks such as “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Corpse Bride,” continues to create whimsical scores in this incredible sequel. Every composition in this movie helps the story continue to stay light and funny whilst being serious during important moments.
The first movie set high expectations for its sequel by winning three Academy Awards and being nominated for five others. It was also incredibly successful with box office earnings over $73 million. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” amassed $110 million during the opening weekend worldwide.
The ending was a little bit unfulfilling with the ending of the Delores plotline not having the big dramatic close that it was building up to, however it was still a great ending to the movie.Every scene had the same goofy feeling as the first, and the plotlines, while seeming a little random at times, came together at the end for an ending befitting Beetlejuice. The final few scenes really pull the whole movie together and tie the loose ends, giving it the happy and final ending the duology needed.
