The athletic program at Plainfield North High School has been run in an orderly fashion by the same Athletic Director, Ron Lear, for almost 20 years. But the 2024-2025 school year will be his last hurrah as he prepares to retire, closing a significant chapter in the school’s history.
Initially hired as the Assistant Athletic Director and Girls’ Bowling Coach, Lear brought years of experience as a Recreation Director and a three-sport head coach at Morris High School, which proves itself by the legacy he is leaving at North. It was not until 2011 that he was promoted to the Athletic Director position. One of the most defining moments of Lear’s career has been his role in elevating North’s athletic programs to new heights. His dedication to student-athletes and outreach to families of North has not only encouraged students to shine on the field but has ensured that they excel academically as well.
“We are student-athletes… meaning we are students first before we head to the athletic arena after school,” Principal Ross Draper said. “That is something he preaches countless times by coaching meetings and creating a culture in athletics with the student’s success.”
As Lear steps into retirement, he leaves behind a department that is stronger and more vibrant than when he first arrived. His future plans remain uncertain, but he will continue to be involved in athletics in some capacity, whether it is announcing, officiating or simply cheering from the sidelines.
“My first love was baseball; I thought I was going to be a head baseball coach and then an Athletic Director,” Lear said. “And I am one of the people out there who can say I lived my dream and became one of the best Athletic Directors in the state of Illinois.”
