Coldplay’s new album, “Moon Music,” released on Oct. 4th. This marks their 10th studio album following their last album, “Music of the Spheres,” released in 2021.
Coldplay is a British rock band consisting of Chris Martin (vocalist and pianist), Jonny Bluckland (guitarist), Guy Berryman (bassist), and Will Champion (drummer and percussionist). The band formed in 1997 in London and made popular songs like “Hymn for The Weekend,” “Viva Le Dia,” and “Sparks.”
The album starts off with the title track being a very instrumental and slow tempo song. It slowly progresses to an upbeat album when it gets to songs like “Feels like i’m falling in love” and “Good Feelings.”
“Moon Music is kind of the story of waking up in the morning and feeling terrible about yourself, terrible about the world – depressed, isolated, separate, alone, and not able to be yourself. Through the album, it’s a journey to feeling the complete opposite at the end of the day” Martin said in an interview with NME.
Coldplay has been releasing music since 1997, making their fans wonder if this will be their last album. Coldplay denied these rumors by saying they will go on a break after releasing their 12 studio albums.
“We’re only going to do 12 proper albums. Less is more, and for some of our critics, even less would be even more! It’s really important that we have that limit,” Martin said.
Other than music, Coldplay is also known for breaking some world records. In 2022, the band announced their world tour, and in the span of three months, over 9.3 million tickets were sold. Coldplay was ranked #1 in Billboard top tours as of July 2024 and passed $1 billion in concert grossing, breaking the record for biggest rock tour in the world.
“Moon Music” is a continuation to their last album, “Music Of Spheres.” The cover work for their last album is quite similar to their new one: the “Music of Spheres” album cover shows nine planets, and each song represents a celestial body from the planets. The artwork for “Moon Music” is a moon bow taken by photographer Matías Alonso Revelli in 2020. Now, “Moon Music” is similar to this album because it goes with the outer space theme.
“I was like: ‘I wonder what musicians are like across the universe?’ and that led to this whole thing and now here we are,” Martin said when asked about his album covers.
Coldplay’s music has touched a lot of fans’ hearts. The band writes music reflecting on their life experiences and their love life. However, “Moon Music” reflects on the tragedies happening in the world right now. Each song talks about how challenging life can get but being positive is the key to all things.
