Seniors Grace Gilbert and Maggie Spencer, juniors Mia Harmon and Brooklynn Griffith, and sophomores Annie Halvorsen and Kiley Sanborn are the first Girls Golf team to make school history by qualifying for the state competition on Oct. 18-19.
As a team, the girls made school history by putting all their hard work into sectionals. They not only attribute each other to this accomplishment but couldn’t be more thankful for their coach’s help.
“Knowing we had a solid team that kept winning all season pushed me to do my best,” Harmon said. “My coaches always gave me a pep talk if they noticed I was having a rough time, which pushed me to do the best I could.”
Someone who has pushed these girls to who they are today, coach Meindl, couldn’t be more proud of these girls and their biggest accomplishment in Girls Golf history.
“As a coach, my job is to help navigate the course, and manage our emotions so that we can stay competitive until the last putt drops. I always tell the girls that every stroke counts and to never give up no matter how bad things are going” Meindl said. “This does set the bar pretty high now that we know we can achieve this. Do I expect to qualify every year? Of course not. Would I like to? Absolutely!”
Playing for the Girls Golf team all four years of high school is not only impressive in the present, but also for future success. The girls could not be more excited for what is coming in the future.
“Going to state won’t impact my future; however, it will impact my college hunt and the responses I will get from college scouts,” Gilbert said.
As Gilbert and Spencer leave North to continue their golf careers, the upcoming seniors are setting goals to continue making history at Plainfield North.
“Some goals I have for next season is to improve my scores and to stay consistent with them and to keep a positive attitude,” Harmon said. “It would be awesome to end my high school golf career to make it back to state next season.”
