The 2024-2025 Girls’ Varsity Basketball team prepared for the new season along with welcoming a new head coach.
After last year’s struggle, making a comeback was the first plan for varsity coach Brittany McWaine. Motivating the girls to focus on their success on the court was the priority.
Mcwaine prioritizes the girls well-being through the rough times, as well as focusing on leaning on each other as the team adjusts.
“My focus has always been to help them understand that basketball is just a game — taking care of their body and mind is what really matters,” McWaine said. “We had to work through some kinks early on, but because of that trust, they’ve been able to find success on the court.”
As McWaine is a former athlete, she knows balancing sports and school can be a struggle that many people may not understand. McWaine has experience in this position and is helping the team emotionally with such a common problem.
“I understand the challenges of balancing school, family, and athletics, and the toll it can take on mental health,” McWaine said. “Previous experiences have reinforced my dedication to creating a space where student-athletes can grow and make mistakes with the support they need.”
The players only have positives to say about McWaine. Her dedication and commitment to planning for the season is having the greatest impact on the team.
“As a captain coach has given me a lot of responsibility and trust, which has given me a lot of confidence on the court,” senior Kaitlyn Sedillo said. “I think all of us are playing a lot more confidently this year and are playing as a team vs individuals.”
Transitioning from her previous assistant coaching positions at Oswego East High School and Waubonsee Community College, her team welcomed coach McWaine.
“The players at north have been incredibly welcoming,” McWaine said. “Everyday when they leave the court, they remind us – and each other – that it’s bigger than basketball.”
